documenting our time
Impersonators or Bahurupiya are destined to treat streets as their stage. They have been performing since ages, get appreciation but never treated like artists. Like other folk performers, they too are denied entry to elite camps of artists. But the community is stubborn to follow the traditions of their forefathers. They are settled in various parts of Bengal and Rajasthan but whole of the country is their stage. Shamshad, who hails from Bandikui in Rajasthan, is just one of them.
Last month he did a workshop for ‘Centre for New Perspective’ at Alliance française de Delhi and taught children about this traditional form of art. I owe him for this opportunity to document him in green room and discuss various issues his community is facing.
